ISO – SWS spectroscopy of IC 443 and the origin of the IRAS 12 and 25 μ m emission from radiative supernova remnants ⋆

چکیده
ISO–SWS spectral observations of the supernova remnant IC443 are presented. Like other radiative SNRs, this object is characterized by prominent line–emitting filaments and relatively strong IRAS 12 and 25 m emission which is commonly interpreted as thermal radiation from very small grains stochastically heated by collisions with the hot plasma behind the shock front. This interpretation is challenged by the data presented in this Letter which indicate that most of the 12 and 25 m IRAS flux is accounted for by ionized line emission (mainly [NeII] and [FeII]). This result also seems to hold for other radiative SNRs. We also discuss the possible contribution of H2 lines to the IRAS 12 m flux from the southern rim of IC443 and briefly analyze the element abundances derived from the observed ionic lines.

Discovery of Strong Radiative Recombination Continua from the Supernova Remnant Ic 443 with Suzaku
We present the Suzaku spectroscopic study of the Galactic middle-aged supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443. The X-ray spectrum in the 1.75–6.0 keV band is described by an optically-thin thermal plasma with the electron temperature of ∼ 0.6 keV and several additional Lyman lines. We robustly detect, for the first time, strong radiative recombination continua (RRC) of H-like Si and S around at 2.7 and ...
متن کاملGamma-ray Emission from Crushed Clouds in Supernova Remnants
It is shown that the radio and gamma-ray emission observed from newly-found “GeV-bright" supernova remnants (SNRs) can be explained by a model, in which a shocked cloud and shock-accelerated cosmic rays (CRs) frozen in it are simultaneously compressed by the supernova blastwave as a result of formation of a radiative cloud shock. Simple reacceleration of pre-existing CRs is generally sufficient...
متن کاملSupernova Remnants in Molecular Clouds
Massive (>∼8 M ) stars may end their lives in the molecular clouds in which they were born. O-type stars probably have sufficient photoionizing radiation and wind power to clear a region > 15 pc in radius of molecular material. Early B stars (B1–B3 on the main sequence, or 8 − 12 M stars) are not capable of this and may interact directly with molecular gas. Molecular clouds are known to be clum...
متن کاملDetection of the “ 44 μ m ” band of water ice in absorption in combined ISO SWS - LWS spectra ?
We report the detection of the transverse optical vibrational band of water ice at 44 μm in absorption towards two embedded infrared sources, IRAS 18316–0602 (RAFGL7009S) and IRAS 19110+1045. The water band extending from 30 to about 80 μm is a prominent feature in the combined ISO SWS and LWS grating spectra. Using new optical constants for amorphous and crystalline water ice, we have modeled ...
متن کاملNonthermal Emission from a Supernova Remnant in a Molecular Cloud
In evolved supernova remnants (SNRs) interacting with molecular clouds, a highly inhomogeneous structure consisting of a forward shock of moderate Mach number, a cooling layer, a dense radiative shell and an interior region filled with hot tenuous plasma is expected. We present a model of nonthermal electron injection, acceleration and propagation in that environment and find that these SNRs ar...
